I have a 5 month old iguana and unfortunately he is petrified of me. He doesn't bite lucky, but the other day when I tried to get him out he shed his tail to get away from me.

it can take anything from 2 months to a year, depending on the age of the animal. Might I recommend that you do not attempt to catch your iguana for a while? Instead, when feeding, watering and cleaning him out, just rest your hand inside as close as you can get without him backing off and leave it there until his panic subsides, then remove your hand, do this as often as you can til he becomes used to your smell and the fact that you're not some giant monster trying to eat him! This will take a while but the rewards are worth it. My last iguana used to sit on my shoulder whenever I was in the house (he was large, 6' from nose to tip of tail) but so gentle that I could take him into primary schools when I used to give talks on reptiles

Short version~ Iguanas lose their tails, and sometimes they will regrow a tail. But the tail will not be the same as it was before. It will more than likely be a different color and also be rounded at the tip instead of pointed.

You really need to work with your iguana so it is not afraid of you. To do this you have to hold it every day. I have included a link below telling you how to socialize your iguana. I wish you luck with the tail, I know how devistated my son would be if that happened to his.

In short- it will grow back but it will not be perfect (scalation, colouration and length will vary).

It will look like a tail again in about 3 months. It will take a lot longer for it to appear anywhere near like it used to.

did the tail actually come off or did it shed skin? If the tail comes off it takes a few years to get it back to normal but it will grow back.

bad news is i had a iguana years ago and its tail came off and it did grow back but it was shorter, black ,round at the end and looked pretty ugly, but was still a cool pet and quite amazing how it can regrow a tail/ugly black short round stump...lol
