On Monday, the following equation gave the exchange rate between the value of the Canadian dollar (C) and the U.S. dollar (U):

C=1.5U

On Tuesday, the exchange rate had changed to the following equation:

C=1.6U

On Monday, Bradely changed $40 U.S. to Canadian dollars at Monday's exchange rate. He did NOT spend any of the money, and on tuesday he changed it back to U.S. dollars at Tuesday's exchange rate. How much money (in U.S. dollars) did Bradley LOSE in this process?

Okay. Take the first equation to solve for the amount of canadian money Bradely got.
C = 1.5($40) = $60.
Now, solve the second equation for U.
$60 = 1.6U or $37.50 = U. The difference is the loss.
$40 - $37.50 = $2.50 is the amount of money Bradely lost.

He lost $2.50.

Put in 40 for the U at Monday's rate. That equals $60 canadian.
If you put the 60 in for C in Tuesday's equation, and solve by dividing 60 by 1.6, it equals $37.50 which means he lost $2.50.

You are not going to travel much in your life, ah?

U(monday) = $40
Monday $40 = 40 * 1.5 = 60 C$

Tuesday: C = 1.6 U ====> U = C / 1.6

U = 60 / 1.6 = 37.5
U(tuesday) = $ 37.5

Loss = U(tuesday) - U(monday) = 40 - 37.5 = $ 2.5

Bradely lost $2.50.

Here is how I solved the problem:
$40(1.5)=$60
$60/1.6=$37.50
$40-$37.5=$2.50

he starts with USD 40.00, changes to Canadian

40 * 1.5 = 60.00 Canadian

later he changes it back

60 / 1.6 = 37.5 USD

40 (starting) - 37.5 (ending) = 2.5USD loss
