Although Henry VIII started the Anglican CHURCH, at its beginning it wasn't all that much different from the Roman Catholic Church that he had broken away from (for the reasons well explained by other answerers). Anglicanism as a separate denomination, with a distinctly different set of beliefs from Roman Catholicism, began to grow under Edward VI (1547-53) and developed pretty fully under Elizabeth I (1558-1603). The "39 Articles" were agreed in 1563 to finally define what Anglicanism really was.

Henry V111 repudiated Papal authority during his reign, but Anglicans traditionally date the origin of their church back to the arrival of the first Archbishop of Canterbury -- Saint Augustine , during the sixth century.
