The answer is $39.37. Here is why:

Your total cost is going to be the cost of dinner + tax (which is equal to 0.07*cost of dinner) + tip (which is equal to 0.20*cost of dinner), all of which as to be less than or equal to $50. Now we turn it into an algebra problem. Let's substitute x for "cost of dinner". We now have:

x+0.07x+0.20x <= 50

Solve algebraically by first combining the x's.

1x+0.07x+0.20x = 1.27x

So we now have 1.27x <= 50

You solve the inequality the same way you would solve an equation. To get x by itself, you divide both sides by 1.27. By doing that you get

x <= 39.37

And there is your answer. Since we substitued X for "the cost of dinner", you can now say that the cost of dinnner has to be less than or equal to $39.37.

x+.2x+.07x<50 dinner+tip+tax < $50
1.27x<50 simplify
50/1.27=39.37 solve for x
x=<39.37 I dont have an equal to or less than sign

ok, first find out information, kinda have to work "backwards".

x = price of dinner
7%(x) = tax
20%(x) = tip

x + 7%x + 20%x = $50

x + 27%x = $50

x(1+27%) = $50

x = $50/ (1+27%)

x = $39.37

check:

39.37 + (7%*39.37) + (20%*39.37) =
39.37 + 2.7559 + 7.874 = 47.9999

tada!!! :)

Say x is the amount you can spend
then x+(x*0.07)+(x*0.20)=50 and you have to solve for x:
x+0.07x+0.20x=50
1.27x=50
x=50/1.27
x=39.37 is what you can spend!

$50/1.07 = $46.73
$46.73/1.2 = $38.94

Max = $38.94 because
$38.94 + 7% tax ($38.94 x 1.07 = $41.67)
$41.67 + 20% tip ($41.67 x 1.2 = $49.99 (or $50.00))

so maximum on the meal is $38.94....
