Find an indoor gym and ask about beginning climbing classes. They often teach you the basics indoors (belaying, rope management, knots, and techniques). Gyms are often a place for climbers to go to stay in shape, and they are a great place to network out and meet people to take you outside. Go to sierratradingpost.com if you are seriously interested in getting gear at a good price. I would recommend starting by buying climbing shoes. (yes, the shoes should be snug)!

Check a larger sports store, like REI or Sun & Ski. They have indoor rock-climbing thingies. Or check the Yellow Pages.

i started a few years ago ... pop down to your nearest climbing wall and ask about beginners courses...climbing forums (search on yahoo) are also a great place to meet experienced climbers most of which are incredibly friendly and usualy willing to give you a few lessons.

A lot of gyms have them now. With classes and all. I can't be specific for you because I am in Alberta and who knows where you are!

Have fun!
