I'm guessing you can do the math and actually need more help understanding how to pull the information needed out of the question. By the way, kudos for not asking for the answer like most do.
First read through the question and mentally seperate out the facts but understand very often you do not need all of them.

So what you have is this...

1. School makes plate lunches for all students.
2. Each plate gets the same serving size of a group of stuff.
3. Apple Sausce 0.75 oz.
4. Chicken 4.5 oz
5. Milk 8 fl oz (fluid ounce is different from a weight oz)
6. Cafeteria has a 5 lb container of Apple Sauce
7. The Question: How many plate lunches can they make from the 5 lb container of Apple Sauce

OK so to answer the question all you really need is:

Apple Sauce serving size is 0.75 oz
They have 5 lb (pounds) of Apple Sause in total

Other bit of info not listed but you are expected to know or find out:

16 oz = 1 lb

Once you have that you can construct the equation to solve for x.

First you have to convert 5 lb to oz (5 * 16) = y.

Then once you are in equal units you can divide the total available number of ounces by the serving size to find out how many servings you can get out of the 5 lb total or x = y / 0.75

Now remember since your dividing y by something less than 1 your answer for x will actually be larger than y not smaller.

So the end equation becomes:

x = ( 5 * 16 ) / 0.75

Best of Luck and again kudos for not asking for the answer.

Multiply 16 x 5 to get the total ounces of applesauce. Then divide by .75 to get the answer.

You need to convert units:

5 lbs * 16 oz / lb = 80 oz of aplesauce.

Then divide the available ounces of applesauce by the ounces per serving, to get total servings.

you need to convert either the applesauce serving to pounds, the container to ounces, there are 16 oz. in a pound.

you have .75 oz/plate, and x oz. in container, since you need plates as a result you will need to divide the x Oz. by .75, this way the oz cancels and you have an answer of plates.

1 pound is equal to 16, so 5 pounds of applesauce is 80 ounces. divide that by .75 ounces.

The equation would be: 5(16)/.75 =

Multiply number of pounds of applesauce times number of ounces in a pound, then divide by number of ounces per serving on a plate lunch.

1st: 5lbs = ?oz
16oz = 1lb
2nd: do 5 over 1(as a fraction) = ? over 16 (as a fraction) and cross multiply to find out how many oz are in 5lbs. You should come up with 80oz.
3rd: now divide 80oz by .75 oz and you get how many plate lunches they can make.
***remember that when you get a decimal you must round up or down. (in this case round down no matter what the decimal is) This is becuase you have to have a whole number. There is no such thing as 3.5 lunch trays.

p=A/s

Where p is the number of plates made
A is the amount of applesauce they have
and S is the size of a serving.

so P= 5lb./0.75oz

you must convert everything to the same unit of measure (1lb = 16oz)

so P= (5*16)oz/0.75oz
P= 80/0.75
