i have an 88 buick with the 3.8 i bought the car the guy said that it jumped time. i replace the chain and both gears. put it back together and no start. so i put a new coil pack and crank sensor and cam sensor and the little magnet on the cam gear put new wires on it to. i took on of the plugs out to see if it gets spark it does but i think it seems a little weak not to sure. the fuel pump cuts on like its suposed to. it just turns over and over and every now and again it back fires but thats rare and suggestion would be great thanks.

Check firing order and pull off gear covers and set the cam top dead center and make sure your crank marker says the same. If they dont you didnt set your timing correctly. if all else fails go to your local auto parts shop and buy a reader and hook it up to the computer lead turn it over and decifer the codes that it sends you. and as a last resort take it to a good mechanic. But it sounds like it is out of time badly. Good Luck

The marks that line up on the cam must be on the marks when chain is installed and adjusted for slack and tension. it sounds as if the valve timeing is all off, and of course check something as simple as the firing order on plug wires.

You need to do a compression check. Some cars get valve damage from the pistons hitting them when the cam timing gets off.
If it has a cam chain tensioner it's real easy to be off a notch when you put the chain on.

If this 3.8 has a mass air flow sensor disconnect it and try to start it. There was a limp mode in the older 3.8 with OBD1 computers.

hi, First verify the air filter out. The black stuff on the tailpipe is condensation and carbon/unburnt gasoline. that's probable the idle gasoline combination solenoid. It should be got rid of and wiped clean or replaced.
