a spider web is a web that has been recently spun by a spider and has a spider still living on it or else just very recently moved or died. a cob web is an old spider web without a spider. one that has been there for a long time

They are the same. "Cob" is an Anglo-Saxon word for "spider." (Related to the German word "Cubbe" or "Cuppe" for spider.)

It has nothing to do with whether "the spider still lives there" or not. All webs can be used by predatory insects and arachnids to catch prey. In fact there are species of spiders that do not spin their own webs, but only use webs left by previous spiders.

the difference is a cob web is a spiders home that has been abandoned and nobody lives there, and a spiders web is a home that has a spider living in it.

One is spun by a spider, the other is spun by a spider with an attitude (you know like he has a cob up his butt)! No, they are exactly the same thing.
