sounds like Roy Clarke's Last of the Summer Wine, which began as a one off in 1973 on one of the BBC1's playhouse, but proved to be so popular it was given its own series.
It follows the lives of 3 ageing delinquents
Compo Simmonite (Bill Owen)
Norman Clegg ( Peter Sallis)
where the principal characters until Bill's death, the third character has changed several times, Cyril Blamire (Michael Bates), Foggy Dewhirst (Brian Wilde), Seymour Utterthwaite (Michael Aldridge) and Truly Truelove (Frank Thornton).
This is also the longest running UK comedy programme with 27 series and 256 episodes
Some of the strange friends include the legendary Nora Batty(Kathy Staff)
