Two words: The GOVERNMENT. Politicians make entirely too much money off of oil. The technology has been around since the 50's to run automobiles off of vegetable oil. Only recently have people been able to get converters on their cars.
The technology IS available.

the technology to make hydrogen efficiently and safely is not here yet...it is very expensive and unsafe. The same holds true for hydrogen storage, transportation, and delivery to the vehicle.

furthermore, it is much cheaper for a car company to design a car that uses a fuel supply that the car company has been utilizing for years(standard gas). To design and develope a car to run on a new fuel source is very expensive. It also doesn't make sense to do if people can't buy hydrogen gas from your local gas station....Just like a pure electic car...where are you going to plug it in? and what about the fact that ti takes many hours to charge...that is why they went with hybrids

Most experts agree that it will take at least 50 years before we live in a hyrdrogen based society...

The best thing to save gas is a hybrid...baby steps

The hydrogen infrastructure is not in place. BMW makes a car that runs on hydrogen but only in Germany.

They are working on that! It just takes a while to get the formula right! Have you ever heard of a hydrogen bomb?! This is the main delay in making these vehicles available to the public.....right now they are still trying to figure out how to make them safe enough for the public!
