i wouldn't call it a disease, i'd call it being despreate, and that's NOT a disease.
if you fear it is in fact taking over your life, be sure it's a mental problem, a silent cry for help, for which you cannot find an alternate way. do try to find on if you have this problem, coz it really is a problem!

It is a mental health problem that needs treatment. If you are diabetic you take insulin and go to the doctor, so if you have a menal health problem you need to get treatment too. Researchers are finding the chemical and organic makeup of the brain can be changed even damaged by trauma, so it really is not that much different than a medical disease because untreated and not getting help may cause things to progressively get worse and it is also chronic, something you will need to learn to cope with for your entire life. Therapy and meds often help you cope so you will not cut. I would do a lot of research however on any med a doc trys to prescribe to you. you have to take into account your age whats going on for you currently, if you want children, possible scary side effects if you decide you don't want to be on meds. there a lot of more holistic options too. Yoga, massage etc. check out all your options.
please get help if you are cutting to cope with overwhelming emotions.

it depends on how u use the words physical or mental. Self-harm is a symptom, not a desease or disorder on its own. As part of a depressive disorder it certainly falls into the category of mental deseases. (mental disorders have genetic, organic or physical causes too). children with mental retardation may also exhibit self-harming behaviours, or obsessive-compulsive patients, as well as in other mental disorders. I dont know of any medical conditions that have this as a characteristic symptom but there are medical conditions that can cause someone to feel depressed and suicidal, like hormonal disorders or brain tumours. In any case one who has this symptom should definitely seek professional help for proper diagnosis and treatment. take care :)

My Friend, WHY? would you want to harm yourself?what is going on in your life that you want to escape?NoOne on this planet is PERFECT unless, you are Jesus or GOD!"HOLLYweird" has got a lot of people confused about WHAT they should look like?Who should they be?It is more Emotional because you may FEEL ugly or unlovable but a shrink would say it's mental.Has someone close to you died? When my dad died in '89 it was the end for me (cutting and suicide )were my only intention but flash forward to 2006 i have 4 beautiful children who love me and i love.i'm all alone w/o a mom or dad but when cutting feels like a GOOD thing to do write in a journal about your anger instead and please seek counseling,if you truely cannot then keep talking on-line to other former "cutters" like myself your not alone in this world.I'm sure your a cool person so don't do it if you need a laugh or relase i'm available o.k.-Desiree S

It is a mental disease with physical manifestations. Some people have stress disorders that make them physically ill (nervous breakdowns, panic attacks, high blood pressure, etc). The stress is the disorder and the manifestations are the symptoms or result of the disorder.

Not nessecarily a disease. It's symptom of severe depression, though, which would make it mental. Wanting to physically punish yourself to allow you to feel a depth of pain that is definable, when you can't figure out why you don't feel anything else emotionally.

There are actually two versions of this--one is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain (one of the neurotransmitters is missing); the second is psychological in nature (self-destructive personality). Both can be treated.
