GONE WITH THE WIND!!! The majority of the movie took place on a southern plantation..... And if you are planning to watch that movie, make sure you have a whole day set aside because it's a loooooooooooooong movie!

Roots... But it isn't set on one tape or dvd, it is a series. Glory (good movie about the civil war)

Google it and search for movies set on southern plantations....

Your main topics to think about will be of course slavery, Jim Crow laws, the Civil War, the Succession of the states, Reconstruction, Union vs. Confederate. I mean there was a lot going on in that era, I think you need to size it down... But hope that helps a little bit.

Gone With The Wind is a product of it's era.

It is VERY misleading about the lives and attitudes of slaves. The slaves are presented either as buffoons, or as grateful for their enslavement.

See the following links for excerpts from The Slave Narratives, which detail the lives of ex-slaves, in their own words, from personal interviews:

If you want a movie, try Beloved. Better yet, read the book, it's by Toni Morrison.
