i dunno...say thanks or just dont say anything just look at the ground and act a bit depressed about it and either find something else to say like "oh well" and start a new conversation, or they will say something back eventually like a question or something maybe...works for me lolz

There is usually no definite answer to a statement like that. Thank You or Its OK' are two very good answer, but sometimes our friends understand if we don't know what to say

I suppose Thank You would be in order although I am still unsure of why people answer with "I'm sorry". Not like it's their fault!!!

Thank them, because it is usually a way for them to show their sympathy and support. Just let them know that you appreciate it.

Yeah, I'll say something like "thanks" than continue on. Or "I appreciate that, it was a difficult time." They're being polite and showing sympathy.

They are just trying to empathize or show support. I usually say thanks. If they keep apologizing, I tell them not to bother because it wasn't their fault.
