It seems like more and more politicians are using scare tactics to get people to do what they want or to vote for their party, this is happening more and more with republicans who say that if we don't let them lead us, there will be a terrorist attack. Is there anyone dumb enough to believe that? The terrorists will attack either way because they think they have a just cause for killing us all. And it's not like the Democrats want us to get killed, they want to live as much as we do.

In a mild way, I think it already is, and what's really sad is the silence, that is, it's hardly being challenged...having lived my younger years in a country where the saying was, "walls have mice, and mice have ears," I have always been curious about control in the West, in particular, the US of A. I think what you have in US is a system that caters to the rich, a kind of a Robin Hood in reverse, and by means of entertaining media the masses were kept kind of content...of course, other nations' resources were constantly being plundered, too, and this also provided enough crumbs for the masses to prevent potential threats...well, the situation has changed...the greed of plutocracy seems insatiable causing a lot more misery in society that can be handled, and with the communication turning the world into a global village, the old methods of cotrol aren't working, so now you are seeing laws that give big brother control. The pretext is 9/11 and fighting terrorism...and although there's a wee bit of truth in this, what is being lost legally is something very precious, the sovereignty of the people...and keep in mind, too, that the events of 9/11 are under a shroud of mystery. The recent laws brought about the demise of Habeas Corpus, a right that was attained in 1215 after a lot of struggle. I think your media and the very small elite in the US society who have hijacked the democracy have been quite successful, because the vast majority of Americans don't even realize the regression that's taking place in their society. When will you realize that the poor and oppressed people whose assets and land are being stolen are not really the enemy, and incidents of terrorism from their side are acts of desperation that most of you would resort to if you faced the atrocities imposed on them.

Yes, and whilst 1984 is a book, it was written as a warning about what happens when a state becomes totalitarian. This is what has happened. If you remember in the book, all of a sudden the side who were allies became enemies, and those who were enemies became allies, and the government maintained it had always been that way. Saddam (sold anthrax and weapons by the US) is evil, Osama Bin Laden (funded by the US, trained by the CIA) is Americas No1 'wanted' man, and Colonel Ghaddafi of Libya is a nice bloke we can do business with (Libya being the training ground for communist and Islamic terrorists).
Civil Rights have been eroded; the Patriot Act.
People are plucked from their homes , imprisoned, tortured without any trial or legal recourse; Guantanemo, Al Ghraib, and George just signed a document making torture legal, because he can no longer send them abroad to be tortured.
Congratulations, you've just realised the Orwellian nightmare, and turned a book into reality.
Room 101, here I come.

It was a story by George Orwell explaining a ideology that takes from what we all want, unity and the comfort that comes with it. But it shows that it was really about control. Control of the masses. It is happening even today within our own government. Communism sounds great.....on paper. But human kind will not ever achieve this. The book showed a grim reality, of then and now.

Wait until Bush starts spouting slogans for some of the things he already believes: Ignorance Is Strength, War Is Peace, Freedom Is Slavery and you'll have it complete. We already have Big Brother watching us - your cell phone calls and e-mails are being monitored....use certain key words and they'll pop up in a computer in Virginia and you can expect a visit from the FBI or Secret Service (also the SS - hey, didn't Hitler use that?).

No, I see no similarity. We haven't always been at war with Eurasia or Eastasia.
Scare tactic? Nah. It's just politics.
FDR's campaign was that he was the guy who kept us out of war. The claim was that a Republican would get us into war.
Michael Dukakis's campain managers claimed that Bush (41) was racist, because the Bush campaign acknowledged that Willie Horton was black. Remember that?
Both sides do it. It's just politics.
A modern day fairy-tale always begins with these words:
"I promise, if I'm elected...."

1984 was written about the rise of fascism, about technology and propaganda serving the political right. It was a frightening vision and is a frightening reality. The present outcome depends on one question: Will the American people have the courage and wisdom to demand a return to true democracy?

Uh, your police state scare scenario is itself a scare tactic, used quite heavily by the leftists and Democrats.
Don't listen to the political rubbish from either side.
And don't be blind to the fact that both sides do it equally.
