As much as which part of Europe? Holland? France? Romania? Ireland? Each of those countries has very different attitudes regarding homosexuality, and usually each population has attitudes as varied as those in the States.

I was born in Ireland and lived there for twelve years. In my experience there are as many homophobic Europeans as there are in the States. What is different is that it seems that while people may personally disapprove of homosexual relationships, they are willing to acknowledge that those relationships may be deserving of protection under the law. Or at least, unwilling to fight against campaigns for equal rights as stringently as their American equivalents.

Many factors...the fear of something different I guess.
America has problems of accepting every minority...and the irony is that everyone is a minority over there. I really dont get it...Europeans have been living in their countries for dozens of centuries, some countries mainly populated by caucasians such as : Sweden, Netherlands, UK, Belgium...yet they are so acceptive of everything...In Netherlands you can see gay couples even in schools (being students). And no bullying. I think that America is like a teenager, still learning while Europe has already seen and done lot more.

Yes but as many get better educated tolerance increases, which is good. With new forms of comunication internet ect it is harder and harder for people to stay ignorant ,but quite a few still manage to it seems ....lol

A massive gap in beliefs exists between America's youth and elderly. Older teens and young adults, who are not religious conservatives, have generally accepted homosexuality as a normal and natural sexual minority. They are far more likely to have one or more gays or lesbians among their circle of friends. They are much more liberal in their beliefs about homosexuality than are their parents.

SIMPLY PUT
the redder the state the,the lesser the education rate, the higher the religious input ,outcome ....intolerance and unfounded hate ...sad isnt it !

hope that helps
hugs!

It was explained to me once that Europe survived the World Wars and afterwards they realized what matters most in life: caring for each other. Imagine bombs blowing up everything and everyone you ever cared about and then, afterwards, being able to rebuild society? In the aftermath, they made a society that sought to correct social injustice. It's not perfect, but they've tried. Future generations, though, that's another story.

Why doesn't America accept the gay population as much as CANADA?

We are both nations comprised entirely of aboriginals, immigrants, and descendents of immigrants.
We are both nations that (historically) tried to colonize and control Aboriginal peoples with Christianity.
We are both nations that had slavery (although much less so and ending much sooner, in Canada)
We are both nations with significant European roots.
We are both nations that are rich in land and natural resources.
We are both nations that are, frankly, HUGE.
We are both nations that are fairly highly developed, with universally accessible publicly-funded eduction to the end of high school, and high rates of participation in post-secondary education.

How the heck did America end up so much more intolerant of differences than Canada? (Especially when it comes to immigrants and queers?) Why is America equated with war, and Canada equated with peace, for the most part?

Things that make you go hmmm......

The "fundamentalists" moved because of the other guys being Christian too... so it's not that. It's kind of stupid to blame a religion for one's choices. The problem with America's mindset is the lack of tolerance. No-one can see someone else being happier than them and they'll go to great lenghts to destroy them. Most Europeans have a more open mind, but not everyone.

No, for one thing, America ISN"T based off "Christian" values. That's a terrible falicy that's obviously been encouraged world wide.
I would invite you to read The Tripoly Treaty.

ding ding ding! we have a winner!

i do think for the most part it is a result of being based on christian values. i also think it has to do with the fact that americans seem to not spend as much time educating themselves about things, but would rather just make assumptions and be done with it. like they don't have the time to spend on getting to know about homosexuality (and other things).

as for where i live: 23 years san diego, CA; 1 year phoenix, AZ; curently stationed in bayern (bavaria), germany
