I've been temping at a company and during that time, I have been helping out a guy that's worked there for quite some time and he'd pretty much ask me to do things he should have been doing. He takes his job seriously, but most of the time, I notice he would stare at me while I would do things and always make a comment if he didn't agree with how I did my work, just not very tactfully.

He's usually not polite, but tries to force it.......Apparently, I've heard other temps have had problems with him too. Even guys that work with him now have problems with him, but just "avoid" him. He is not a team player, as I had observed and gets demanding and asks that I do things for him that require physical labor that he should be doing, but is not.

He came up to me and told me once I was full-time he realized I would have my own job to do and he wouldn't ask for my help. He said this several times, and not as a full-timer, one week in, he's asking me to do his work

again? How do I handle it, because my co-worker who's known him tells me not to grin and bear it because he's going to take advantage of me but every time I have politely spoken up to this person he doesn't listen nor respect what I tell him. It goes in one ear, out the other. I know it won't look good if I go to the manager, so should I wait until my boss meets with everyone in my dept. to explain to this difficult co-worker what exactly my job was and not be his personal assistant?

Likely that he's insecure with his own work and feels threatened by anyone. By you doing his work it makes him look better to the Boss, so make sure that any work assignment for him that you complete is credited to you - make it known to the Management/Boss.

You aren't going to cure a lazy bully but you might be able to cure him of talking to you. Don't ask open-ended questions, not even 'How are you?' Limit your greetings to 'good morning' and 'good evening.' And be busy -- all the time. The words 'I'm sorry, I don't have time to chat or do your work right now" are your friends. Know them, love them, use them. Let him know you've been assigned something by the Boss that takes priority.

If you do go to the Boss with the issue/problem, make a list of the specifics you want to address, research the issue and get your facts right. When you have everything ready, schedule a meeting, and be cool and professional. Don't complain and watch what you say to anyone at work.

Based on what you wrote, it's pretty obvious why he only hires temps instead of someone fulltime to be his assistant. If you're serious about becoming full time at that place, when you meet with the HR, tell them you want to stay but NOT in that current position, then list the reasons why.

I would refuse tasks that you are not required to do. He has no recourse as far as your employment is concerned. Seeing that you don't seem to mind whether or not he likes you, the results can only be positive. He will either flip out and show people who he really is, or realize that you are not his slave and leave you alone. If he goes to his boss, you are in the right, you are doing what is required of you. Its tough to stand up to a jerk but it makes life easier in the long run.

Just tell him you have your own work to do and are unable to do it for him right now. Just keep refusing to do it. don't let this guy walk all over you.
