Having owned an F355 and driven a few Porsches in my time I can tell you they are completely different beasts.
Both have great levels of performance but to me the Ferrais are works of art and I would always chose them over the rather more utilitarian designs of Porsche.
I did own a Boxster for a while and that was fun but now I have children now so the larger Porsche becomes more practical and when all is said and done unless you have two or three cars the Ferrari is just too impractical, I sold mine two years ago :(

They are both "okay."
If you said a 997 or a 993 - then hands down that's the way to go...
I was never fond of the 996 look...
Can't tell you about a Ferrari - though I have one being dropped off in my driveway this Thursday a 348 - and it's mine for one whole week!!! (Nice prize to win - isn't it?)
Meanwhile, before you make your decision -- check out the mechanics in your area. Both the Porsche and Ferrari are expensive to maintain - unless you do the work yourself. If you are in an area that does not have a reputable mechanic for one - then go with the other...
No matter what - the key to owning and being able to use these beautiful cars is maintenance. Without it, you might as well be driving a 1963 Bug...

allow me to approach this from a different angle......
what would your purpose for either be ???? are you looking for something strictly as a weekend, fair-weather pu$$y-getter ? or are you looking for something you can actually drive ??? another question would be - how are the roads/streets in your area ?
Ferraris are VERY low to the ground and find EVERY bump, etc.
Porsches are much more 'forgiving'.
Ferraris are also much more 'delicate'.
So, if you want attention - no doubt, go with the Ferrari. If you want something a little more practical, go with the Porsche. My 911 was not a turbo and I described it as: ' a go-cart on crack', so I can only imagine how either of the 2 choices would be.
Whichever you chose, be careful. I had the 911 out on a beautiful Sunday afternoon 'blowing the cobwebs out'. (not showing off, racing, etc. - just out for a 'spirited drive'.) At 105 I went to shift from 3rd to 4th and went 3rd to 2nd instead.......oops !

street and music did a comparsion attempt some months in the past and the F430 beat the 911 swifter. Now there are upgraded variations the Ferrari F430 Scudaria and the Porsche GT2, i do no longer know who will win that one..
