The Ascent of Man
To see Jacob Bronowski scoop up a handful of what he thought was just muddy water from a puddle in Auschwitz and realise that it contained the ashes of incinerated victims of the Holocaust,as he explains that "We have to cure ourselves of the itch for absolute knowledge and power,we have to close the distance between the push-button order and the human act,we have to touch people".It's so moving that you'll know that you've just seen the real power of television and felt a part of humanity.

Seinfeld. Best series EVER. It is the first show to be about NOTHING and still be incredibly funny. Every single one of life's important observations can be related to an episode in Seinfeld. Not to mention that the characters are fantastic. C'mon, what other show would have a Soup Nazi?

Second best show ever is The Simpsons for obvious reasons. Homer? Helllllooooo!

Since you opened it up to "ever," I would have to say that classics like Lucy and Gilligan's Island come to mind...but if I were only allowed to select one series..it would be "Logan's Run." Does anyone remember that one? It was sci-fi and revolved around "runners" who didn't want to die because they had reached a certain age. The community was enclosed and when humans reached this age they went to "carousel" and were basically disintegrated into nothingness...but they were lied to and told that it was great. Logan and some others ran and the officials followed them. I never missed an episode and just loved the details of time and what might happen in the future. Of course, this was in the 70's I think...and the world was all caught up in the Cold War.

There was a channel 4 series in the 90's called Ultraviolet. It was about modern day vampires and had Jack Davenport in it. I thought it was amazing and couldn't believe they didn't make a second series.

Does anyone else remember it ?

The new Battlestar Galactica is brilliant. The writing and drama are top notch. The storyline flows well, turns in the story keep you in suspense, and with the 12 episode seasons there is very little fluff added.

Star Trek was never this good.

Two shows stand out in my mind. The first is
Gunsmoke." It was a very unusual Western...it had drama, great humor and of course, the one and only James Arness!!!
The second is "Little House On The Prairie." Family values were stressed time and time again. I watch both shows on tv land to relax and go back to that time in my life when stress was not a part of my vocabulary.

The Simpsons because it sometimes actually makes me cry and it is actually sometimes quite moving and bloody funny all at the same time. Also Blackadder (except the first series) just because it's still funny today - about a decade or so later! Classic!
