I played the oboe in high school, so I understand. During the concert season, a double-reed instrument is fun. During the marching season? Not so much. I learned to play the glockenspiel and marched with the percussion section during the marching season, and then went back to my oboe for the concerts. Ask your band director for a suggestion of an alternate for the marching season and then stick with your bassoon the rest of the year. Good bassoon players are hard to find--good luck!

P.S. Learn to play the beginning of Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring"--awesome bassoon solo!
