I wish you were close enough, I would help them make a quilt apiece. You can find some really easy patterns. I taught my daughter that young, and last year I taught my niece. What is so neat, they only need to do a straight stitch, which is really easy.

Have fun watching things grow.
Eat a tomato you grew.
Give a plant to a friend as a present.
I think it would be cool if you planted things and watch them grow.
There are many easy and cheap ways to do this.
You could get some plastic pots and fill them with potting mix and plant some seedlings.(You can buy them at a nursery.)
Or (even cheaper and my favourite) you could take cuttings of plants that you like and pop them in the soil.
You can also plant seeds from apples or tomatos or anything really.
Just experiment. It's so much fun when it works.
Look up on the net about how to strike cuttings.
One of my favourite things to do is to walk around my neighbourhood and if I see a tree that I like, I snip or break off a few inches and take it home and plant it. Sometimes (after a few weeks or so) it gets roots and leaves. Sometimes it doesn't. But when it works and you have a new plant that you like it feels pretty cool. Anyway good luck and if you do take cuttings, make sure you have an adult with you and don't just take cuttings from peoples yards because they might not be very happy about that, just ask and usually they will say "sure, no worries mate." and let you take a cutting.
Have fun,
the happy gardener

This is what I did as a 12 year old trying to help my single mom out as much as possible. Depending on where you live, the weather etc... you can have them start a simple yard service around your neighborhood. I helped out elderly people when I saw that they needed it, whether it was carrying in groceries, or washing their car, mowing the lawn, vacuuming, yard work, etc... I never asked for money, but always ended up making about $10-$20 a job. I personally helped my mom with things for me, dance classes, cheer costs... and just by doing that, it helped her more than I think I will ever know. Plus it taught me to not expect too much for a job that I am capable of doing for free! Also, this would put some work on you as a parent, but weekend pet sitting jobs... Especially with the holidays coming up! It might require you going with them since they would be going indoors and might not be in the area... walking dogs would be cheap and fun for them too. I am 23 years old now, and still do this. I will get out of my car if I see someone struggling with the mower.

Make a documentary about their family and their life as 11 year olds using a camcorder, they can then share it with others and will be able to watch it when they are older. Preserving a special time in their lives is priceless. I wish I would have done that earlier and have a chance to re-visit with some of the special people in my life that are no longer with us.

Go to a home improvement store and buy some white tiles (they're like 10 cents a piece) and have them paint designs on them and use them as coasters. You can get like 10 things of paint (has to be for tile or glass though) at a hobby store for about $2.00.
