I'd say "slobs" have a "genetic predisposition" toward "choosing that lifestyle", which some people may consider a mental "illness".

A person who is hunched genetically and has facial features such as blotchy skin could be viewd as a slob because of poor standards of posture. However most could put a little effort. So I say it is possible to be genetic. However if it is facial hair/ clothes that are dirty/ or just a mess then they are making a chosen lifestyle. I will see them at autozone fetching my cabin air filter for the lexus.

My Grandma always said, "You can reform a slob but you can't turn a neat person into one". The slobs I've met just seem to have a lack of organizational skills, they're not necessarily lazy. That's why people have gotten rich organizing people's closets, houses, offices etc. Slobs just need to be shown a plan to follow!

possibly a combination of chosen lifestyle, environment rather than genetics, and possibly illness, such as chronic fatigue, depression, mental illnesses. slobs just don't care enough to change..... and I think some like it that way.

Thinks it's some of all. You might've grown up in a messy house and never have really known the difference or the value of cleaning up. Could be that you deal with problems that leave you emotionally apathetic about that stuff. Or you might not care at all just because.

A bit of all three. Some people are raised in filth and just continue on into adulthood, some people are just lazy and some have such low self esteem that they feel why should they bother when no one cares anyhow.

What is chosen is to continue the lifestyle, once one discovers the problem.

Tell you what.... go out to a large Pig farm and open the gate and walk into the middle of the pen. If they gather around you ...... you fit right in.
