I believe this is an English speaking country, and if you want to live here you have to speak the language most commonly used.

Don't like it? Don't move here. It's our language.

It is the main accepted language of the USA. Its just not legislated as the official language-- whatever that means.

Why should you have to speak english to live here? Employers should require their employees to speak english -- but that's a different story.

To become a citizen, you need to show that you can read, write and speak english. There are exceptions for people who are elderly however.

Who are you or anybody else to tell me I can't speak Italian to my 80 year old mom in public.

I have no problem with people wanting to move here from other countries who don't speak the english language. I do have a problem being passed up for a job because I do not speak a second language. I was specifically told that was the reason I did not get hired. I did not apply to a foreign business nor anything having to do with direct contact with another country. It was a local business that passed me up for someone who spoke spanish. It's harder and harder to get a job if you don't speak a second language. If you move to another country and you don't know how to speak their language...you better learn. We are allowing segregation to take place and no wonder we have racist groups and hatred going on. When I studied in Japan for a year, I learned the language. I am not going to come back here and have to learn Spanish now.

Agreed. Every other country has an official language. It's a sign of respect to learn the language if one wants to visit or reside in a country.

Having an official language would NOT prohibit people from speaking their own language in private!

Yes. It should be MANDATORY that all United States citizens speak English in public settings. At home you can speak whatever language you want to use.

It already is. There is just no law declaring it the official language.

Yes and I don't know why Congress feels they have to debate this issue every few years.
