I have a two bedroom appartment, about 750 SQFT. My daughter really wants a pet (other than her fish). Would a cat be better, or a small dog? I have never had either one, so I have no experiance with owning one. But I do work M-F 8-5 with an hour commute both ways, and I know that dogs need more attention than cats, but a dog would be more playful with my daughter. Sugestions?

When it comes to apartment living you cannot do better than a cat. Cats are small and do not need a lot of space. Plus they are clean and you do not have to walk them. Alos cats do not mind being left alone while you are at work. Cats can be surprisingly playful. Get the kitty some toys and watch them go nuts.

Why do you think a dog would be more playful with your daughter? You've never had either one yet you feel qualified to make a statement like that? Well, it isn't true, cats are plenty playful, just don't get a Siamese, they tend to be high strung. And so do most small dogs.

How old is your daughter? If she is five or younger then you might not want a cat. However, since you're going to be gone at least 11 hours a day, five days a week, then you don't want a dog making your apartment it's toilet or annoying your neighbours with it's yapping. A cat is usually a better bet.

A cat--definitely a cat. Dogs are needy and can't be left on their own. With a cat, you can take off for an entire weekend, leave them enough food and a clean litterbox, and come back to a home. With a dog, come back 10 minutes late and it's pooped and peed all over the place. Never mind what the dog would do if you left out a whole weekend's worth of food--eat it up at once, throw up on your best upholstery, and shred the place because it's starving.

If you think cats aren't playful, you've never seen one trail a piece of string or go crazy batting and chasing a ping-pong ball. Note: the amount of fun a cat will have with a toy is inversely proportional to the cost of the toy.

If you really want playful, get two cats, preferably littermates. Spay/neuter them as early as the vet will allow--this is especially important with males, as they will not pick up the habit of spraying urine if neutered early.

Enjoy!

Both cats and dogs can leave hair.

Dogs can be more playful and interact with you more once you establish the fact that you (and your daughter) are the master.

Cats can be playful but at her own time.

Dogs need to be walked/exercised. Especially in an apartment setting, this is also important for bathroom.

Cats need a litter box and they're good to go.

Dogs may or may not scratch/bite on furniture/household items.

Cats may be more likely to scratch up the furniture -- need a scratching post.

If you're the one caring for the pet, then get a cat. They can take care of themselves. Dogs need attention always.

If you get a small breed dog, you can cage them during the day to keep than from tearing up your apartment. The dogs actually feel more secure when they have set boundaries so it is not cruel and causes them no stress. You have to give them a lot of attention when you get home, however.

Cats require a lot of attention also(not to mention the litter box). Otherwise they will spray or do other things to get attention. If your daughter is very young, a cat is not usually a good choice for a pet. I have a Siamese, but it runs from children and hides.

.A cat....I think they are better for smaller homes and they are more independent than a dog, you wont have to spend a lot of time with it and you wont have to take it outside in the middle of the night or if its raining outside. I have a dog in the house and when it rains and I let her out she stinks so bad, a cat is also automatically litter trained you wont have to spend time trying to train the cat like a dog. Just my opinion...I like dogs better than cats but cats are easier to keep if you don't have a lot of time to devote to a pet and she might get tired of if after a while, think about that too, a cat can just mind its own business while a dog always needs attention, they are more affectionate.

Dogs, puppies are a lot of work and it sounds like you will be doing most of it. Kids are notorious for wanting a pet and never taking care of it. Get a cat, they can take care of themselves, and all you need to do is feed them and change cat litter. Dogs need walked all the time and want to play and be stupid. PLUS, in an apartment do you want a barking dog or a quiet cat?

Get a ferret!!!!! They are so much fun! They can be trained to use a litter box and love to play! A cat is boring and a dog chews things! A ferret is a very unique animal and is very smart. You would love it! I have an albino and she is so cool! Just remember if you get one, the more you bathe them the more scent they give off! So maybe once a month would be good. This happens even if their gland is removed, But if you take care of them right, they don't smell real bad! I don't ever regret getting her! My daughter is 2 and loves her to pieces!!!

I suggest a cat. They dont need alot of attention, they GO in litter boxes so they dont need to be taken out,but you need to change the litter every once in a while. But they are great pets because a cat will play great with your daughter. They love to chase toy mice, string, ect. But they are also very loving and will make you feel better after a bad day. thats what i think.
