Flight mode is a feature in many mobile phones and PDAs that allows you to use basic operations of the device while the transmitting function is switched off. This enables passengers on airplanes to use the device in-flight, provided the device was switched to flight mode before take-off. In flight mode, users cannot perform some functions such as SMS or make phone calls. Flight mode is also called airplane mode, offline mode, or standalone mode.

You're currently not allowed to have an operational cellphone ( able to make or receive calls) on board a plane, especially during takeoff and landing-You will be told to turn Your phone off beforehand. Flight mode must be a way of disabling the radio transmit/receive ability so You can continue using the phone's non-communication functions only-games,calculator,reading texts, etc. Check Your phone's handbook or maker's website for explanation.

Am I right in thinking this comes up when you first turn the phone on and that you then have to press a button for it to keep loading up? If so, it's to stop the phone being turned on by accident when it is in a pocket or bag when you are in transit, traditionally on aeroplanes, but also gas stations and other places you are supposed to turn your phone off before entering.

Unlocked phone means that the phone is capable of working with more than one carrier. When you purchase a phone from an actual phone company, they lock the phone to their system so that you can not use it somewhere else. If you buy an unlocked phone, you can use the phone with any carrier that uses a sim card.
