Usually in places where there was a sea or lake bottom MANY years ago and subsequently the pressure of material added above has compacted the sedimentary layers into rock.

Sedimentary rocks are found anywhere that water used to exist, or is present now. Sedimentary rocks are formed when water either dissolves and/or deposits minerals and/or organic matter, and eventually becomes rock, when the water isn't there anymore.

Sedimentary rock is found in places where there is, or was, a lot of water. My parents' place in the country has a lot of red sandstone. Long, long, long ago, there was in inland sea there.
