Virgin Mary Statue?

I was given this statue and I am trying to find out more about it but I am having no luck.It stands about 12" high and looks like it was carved out of ?(some sort of-i just cant tell).The only writing is on the lower base and it reads LEFA-ART.Any information on a date or who might of made it or where it came from would be great.
