You really should ask this question in the Computer section, but ask about a "computer server," although they'll know over there that you're not asking about a waiter.

But don't ask such general questions as "How much does a house cost?" How much does it cost to maintain a house?

It will depend a lot what you want to use the server for -- gaming, chat room, business or home network, etc, and how many computers you want it to "serve."

All a server does is serve up information to other computers. When several computers are networked together, they can talk to each other Peer to Peer, or one on one, or one computer on the network can be didicated as the server, where all common files are kept. This latter type is generally used in offices and corporations, while the earlier is more typical in homes.

Corporations like to use a central server so that all employees can have access to the most recent files and programs, and still communicate with each other. Work groups can sometimes work on the same file simultaneously via the server, and they could be on opposite sides of the office, or 20 floors down, or on opposite sides of the country.

When you hook up to the internet, you are connecting to a server dedicated to keeping track of addresses and routing information. When you send email, you connect to a server that is a dedicated computer just for sending and receiving email. In fact, there may be a whole bank of servers just for this purpose.

Often, a server doesn't have a keyboard or monitor, but is accessed from one of the nodes or terminals on the network.

All a server does is manage information flow and storage, and serves other computers.
