Here's the the DSM-IV (what all psychologists and psychiatrists use to diagnose disorders) definition of OCD:

First, the person must have an obsession or compulsion. Yours sounds more like a compulsion. Here's what defines a compulsion: "repetitive behaviors (e.g., hand washing, ordering, checking) or mental acts (e.g., praying, counting, repeating words silently) that the person feels driven to perform in response to an obsession, or according to rules that must be applied rigidly" AND "the behaviors or mental acts are aimed at preventing or reducing distress or preventing some dreaded event or situation; however, these behaviors or mental acts either are not connected in a realistic way with what they are designed to neutralize or prevent or are clearly excessive"
You must meet both of these criteria.

2. You recognize that the compulsions are excessive and unreasonable but continue to do them.

3. The compulsion causes distress, is time-consuming (taking more than one hour) OR significantly interferes with your professional, personal or academic life.

It doesn't seem as though your compulsion really has a huge effect on your life. Most people I know have little idiosyncracies (collecting every single receipt, even for a pack of gum; organizing money via the serial number on the front; not being able to do anything unless it's written -- and then crossed off -- a to-do list; etc). In short, we're all kind of messed up in our own ways, and I don't think you need professional help or anything.

You have OCD. I used to do the turn around thing--and I thought I was the only one who did that. LOL I grew out of that one, but I still check to make sure things are turned off many times and that the front door is locked...stuff like that. When I get stressed, it's worse. If you think yours is interfering with your life, then you should see a doctor.

Go to your doctor and discuss this...It does sound like OCD but can't be diagnosed over the internet. There is excellent treatment for this and many other similar conditions with very useful medication. But you must take those medications exactly how the doctor prescribes and return for all recommended follow ups. If you don't, your illness will worsen and things in your life will get worse and worse....Your mother is very very wrong....you need expert help now!

OCD- Obsessive Compulsive disorder.

Having to like wash hands over and over. Going back over and over to make sure a door is closed, oven is off...etc...we all feel urge to go back and check something occasionally like " did I leave the curling Iron on?" It's the extreme of doing it over and over and you can't really have a life withour theropy or meds

You may have a slight case of OCD, but as long as it isn't effecting your life don't sweat it.
