I'm a decent singer and it's all through sheer practice. Everyday when I have a chance to myself, I sing. I sing quietly first; just random songs that I can pull from my head for warm-up. Then I get into a routine by singing a specific song that I want to practice on. I would also change my voice styles from low-key to soprano, trying to hear what would sound best for my voice [it also helps to have someone critique you or to record your voice so you know you're sounding how you want to].
Other times I practice on scales and go from C to A. I would hold each note for about 30 seconds or more and then rise up the staffs [I sing loud enough so that people get annoyed]. This helps with tuning your voice and memorizing the keys to help with reading music. It's also a great way to expand your octaves and voice transmission.
Now I know I can always get better and the only way about it is to have confidence and dedication to sing [Painful practice is the only way well emotionally you have to be ready too] [You can get better too if you want to].

Do you sound like anyone? What is your range? How long have you tried singing? What music do you sing? High, low, middle vocal sound? Are you a group singer or a lead singer? Male or female? These are real questions here. I have been singing for years, and I can give you pointers.... First, with singing, you learn to stand, breathe, project. I can give you pointers on that and more but you need to give more info. I am NOT religious, but you can often learn some useful tips by singing in a choir - and it's free.

Try singing to different types of music to get a variety of styles. You can sometimes then see what type of music fits your voice. This is really embarassing and I only do this in the car, but I sing as loud as I can to Mariah Carey and try to get my range better. She also can fluctuate her voice really awesome. It helps to learn the song and then try to sing it without the artist on, like to the music only. It is my cheap version of voice lessons... :)

Take private lessons, or just join a choir. It's great practice. A lot of people in my choir last year sang in bands. I had a lot of fun!
