dust? I dump mine from the tray into a 8 gallon bucket and carrying it out my compost pile when that is full.
What you you do with your ashes?

Burning paper produces a LOT more ashes than burning wood. I would put the ashes in a METAL bucket! I almost started a housefire once putting them in a plastic bucket to close to the house. Compost pile is a good place for them yes.

Get an ash bucket with a lid. Instead of dumping from the tray, you should scoop it out and place it in the bucket so it doesn't fall through the air very far.

one way you can cut down on dust is to set a small bucket in the fireplace and scoop them into it, then carry it out to a bigger bucket or the compost pile. I used to dump them in hte garden, I don't have a fireplace anymore...

If You have a lawn You may use it as a fertilizer. Reduces moss and helps other ferts to digest to the lawn. This applies best to clean wood ash, paper ash is a horse of another color.

If you dont want the ashes then dont burn as much. I dump the ashes in the woods, after they are cold of course.
