My wife and I have selected our son's name and can't agree on how to spell it.

I like Graeme because it is a trditional Scottish spelling and is a little different. I think it has more character.

My wife likes Graham because people may get confused and butcher the pronunciation of Graeme.

Where we live there is a huge immigrant population, so teachers and kids are more sensitive to names now more than ever.

I am ready to admit defeat if our public says I should just shut up and listen to my wife.

I guesss I don't want to dumb down the name for those who don't want to take the time to pronounce it corectly.

What do you all think?

My sister named my nephew Geoffrey and gets mad when people spell it Jeffrey.

Many people don't know that there are usually many ways to spell any given name, and even have trouble with its most common spelling. It's sad to think that you might toss a perfectly good name with a good background because of other people, what a way to start off your child's life, by giving into peer presure. Hope you don't want your child to grow up doing the same thing.

Use the name you want for your child, it is after all your child and not the world's. If someone asks the name for purposes of writing it down, then simply make certain to spell it out after saying it. Heck, if you name him 'Graham' you still might have to spell it for people for them to get it corrcetly.

I agree with your wife but, I have a solution for you. Pick a middle name and do all of the Scottish tradition. Besides Graham looks better then Graeme.

Graham. He will be explaining his whole life how to spell it and pronounce it if it is Graeme. I know it's pronounced like Graham, but others might think Gray-mee? Gray-emm? Grah-eem?
