If you really wanted a good answer you would need to let people know why you are asking, as far as what YOU mean by "in your system".
Legally, the term "in your system" means detectable by any known test.
If you mean to ask how long it actually impairs or affects somebody, it depends on the individual, the strain of cannabis, how it was used (smoked or ingested), and lots of other factors. The normal amount of time for smoked cannabis would probably be about 3 to 6 hours.
Cannabis is tested for by measuring it's metabolites (what your body produces when it is exposed to marijuana). The metabolites cling to fat cells in your body, and slowly "trickle out" through sweat, urine, etc. and can be detected in urine up to a month or slightly longer in heavy users, or might not show up in sufficient quantities to "test positive" even the next day in a VERY light user. Drinking LOTS and LOTS of water will help cleanse and also dilute the metabolites in your system so that a negative (passing - that's what you want, I think) test is more likey. Also, the urine from the middle of your stream will be "cleaner", so if you pee a little in the toilet or whatever, then into the cup, then finish into the toilet, you'll get a better result. Your first urine in the morning has more accumulation, so go to the bathroom BEFORE the test a few times if you can. If you had a lot of water and your urine is too clear, it will be considered suspicious, so taking a vitamin-B pill is a good idea, because it will make it more yellow.
If the test is from blood or saliva, cannabis should only show up for a few hours after using it; Maybe up to 48 hours after, but usually less.
If the test is taken from a hair sample (shaving your head won't help - they could still test body hair!) it can be detected back from any point that that hair was growing on your body. In other words, if your hair was 18 inches long, and you had hair on your head today that was also growing there two years ago when you smoked some pot, you could test positive for cannabis detected "in your system" today. Isn't that just WRONG? But most testing centers or employers only test between 1 and a half to 3 inches of hair, meaning maybe 90 days or up to 6 months. So stick THAT in your pipe and smoke it!

my husband has just had a random works drug test(passed lol) and asked the tester the same question, the answer was 4 weeks in a urine sample. The police test is a bit more intence and cannabis can stay present in your hair dna for up to 2 years!

It depends on your frequency of use. A daily pot smoker can usually clear their system to an undetectable level in 4-5 weeks. Using golden seal and other such herbs will shorten this time by about one third. However, many drug panels include a test for these masking agents as well, so be carefull.

If you are a casual smoker (once a week) it will take about 2 weeks for it to clear to low enough levels.

It all depends on how much and how often is used, but usually it can be detected (on a regular user) for about a month. For the occasional user it would leave the system within days as long as it wasn't a heavy one. In the UK the hair test is rarely used, but it can be detected after a few months as it tests the "centre" of the hair.

The length of time that it can stay in your system varies but basically it is until the package falls out of your anus - to the delight of the customs officer.

It gets incorporated into new hair growth, so in theory you could test positive from any hair which was growing on your body at the time you took it. Hair has a long lifespan, so give yourself a lot of time before any compulsory testing!

It depends how long you have been smoking it for. It's anything from 1 week to 50 days.
