I air out my equipment after every practice/game and I wash any equipment that I can throw in the washing machine i.e. socks, jerseys. I know that they have services where you can drop your equipment and have them clean it, but I cannot do that after every use. Any suggestions on how to keep my equipment smelling better especially my skates??

When I was in my 20's I was an equipment girl for a local hockey team – I KNOW what you mean

Get cedar shavings for like a hamster cage and stuff some into ladies knee-hi nylon stocking tie off the end and stuff into your skates when your not wearing them… it works and it smell SO manly! ;)

You can throw another stocking full in you equipotent bag for the rest of the stinky stuff… replace as needed…

Wash what you can. Fabreeze what you can't. Then, make sure you air out your equipment and bag after each time you play.

I suggest you purchase a "Freddy Fresh Puck" It is an air freshener designed for equipment bags. It looks like a puck, but made of plastic, the inside looks like a urinal puck. You can email the manufacturer to ask where in your area they are sold.

You don't. Hockey equipment is the smelliest stuff ever put on this earth.

You can't avoid it. I played and know. Gear from HS still stinks and I am 12 years out. Ever sit behind the bench at a professional hockey game? Don't.

I'd be amazed if a product like Febreeze even makes a dent in hockey stench. Foul, foul stuff.

Wash your bag. If you keep cleaning your equipment and putting it back in the bag, you'll never get rid of the smell. For the skates, use a doctor scholls or odor eater soles.

Hockey equipment always smells like a dead homeless person... There is no way to "get rid of it" but you can get antimicrobial inserts for the foot bed, and through one of those baking soda bags into the hockey bag to try and suck up some of the horrid stench...

I think that the gloves are the worst smelling

Try putting your gear out to air in the sun; it kills bacteria.

That and airing it out, as you say, after every game.

If your gear is taken out of the bag and set out to dry dry after every game and practice, it shouldn't smell too bad. I wouldn't use Febreeze on my gear.

You could try getting it professionally cleaned once, and then absolutely stay on top of putting it all out to dry every time. Are you wearing cotton sports socks? Anything other than cotton might be contributing to the skate smell problem.

Most rinks have flyers about people/firms who clean hockey equipment. Do this a few times per year.

erm, maybe put one of those little xmas trees in it that people hang in their cars to make them smell nicer (they don't smell nice at all, but almost anything is better then sweaty skates, so it can't hurt).
maybe put on in your hockey bag as well..
