I'm not quite clear on what you're asking.

If you want to make a complete image of your entire system (C: drive with operating system, registry, programs etc) to an external drive, use a program like Symantec/Norton Ghost, V-Com Copy commander or Iomega's backup that comes with their external hard drives. If your C: drive ever fails, you can then boot from the CD and restore the entire image from that external drive, to a new internal C: drive, without having to reinstall everything.

very very hard to understand..
1- installing any thing is not problem whether internal or external drive...just grab software cd run its exe..all done..wht s the problem...
2- u can run wizard of restore...if ur system fails..then go to start menu > Programs >Accessories >System tools >System restore..run this wizard when ur system fails to comply...
3- whtever u instal or uninstall ur Ram will not be affected...unless u dont have Hard ware problem...
No software can harm Ram...chaoo

If your talking about personal documents then you can copy and paste. If your talking about backing up your system with porgrams and stuff, then you will have to do a system restore. Everything you install goes into your registry, so you can not simply copy and paste that stuff.

You can backup everything as it is now and restore it again at a later date to exactly as it is now.
