If I write on the sidewalk (not in front of my house) is that considered vandalism?

It can be considered defacement, but really shouldn't be a big deal . . . depending on what you are writing/drawing. It's a sad day when a kid can't draw on a sidewalk with chalk. . . again unless you are drawing or writing something lewd obscene or offensive.

If someone wrote in chalk on the sidewalk or on the street in front of my house, I would consider it a nuisance.

Technically yes, though it would be a tad bizarre if it resulted in the police arriving at your house with a SWAT team in the middle of the night. Although if your Islamic, the chances of that happening are greatly increased.
