What a seriously bizarre question. Have you never worked hard? The benefits include a better life in all of its dimensions. People in America work hard for the same reasons that anyone else does.

First, of course, is the money. Most people behave as if more income = more happiness. For some people, that's all there is to it.

Psychologically, many people feel satisfaction from work. It gives them a sense of contribution and of personal fulfillment. It can even be the #1 reason for living, especially for men and for those in positions of responsibility. People get caught up in the goals of the company they work for and feel (temporary) pleasure in meeting them.

Job satisfaction is also (for many) about making friends, or mates, at work. And some people like the teamwork.

Why Americans work more hours than Europeans is a more difficult question. Germans, in particular, are known for 6-weeks or more paid leave vs two or even one for a lot of Americans. Probably the "consumer" (products) culture is more impactful in the States, whereas "leisure" is more valued in Europe.

The new buzzword is "work-life balance". We reject promotions if they require a move to another city because our children are happy in their present schools, or our wife is happy in her present job. We demand time off for father's funeral, even if we are intrnational sports players. But not all of us are awake to that new dynamic: for some folks, money and (pseudo) status from the corporation is all.
