The basic origins people have suggested is correct, but the meaning is just a bit off. It means "Yahweh [or 'the LORD] is gracious." (Unfortunately "baby name" books and sites tend to be a bit sloppy, which leads to a lot of mistakes --some large, some small.)

Here's how it works:

"Shauna" is the feminine name
based on English "Shaun"
which is an Anglicized form ofthe Irish name "Sean"
which is a form of "John"
which comes from the Latin "Iohannes"
based on the Greek "Ioannes"
from an original Hebrew name "Yochanan" [the "ch" here is pronounced like the "ch" in Scottish "loch"]

"Yochanan" means "Yah(weh) is gracious". "Yahweh" [the probable pronunciation of YHWH] is the Hebrew PERSONAL name for their God who rescued them from Egypt ("God" is generic). Because it points to their personal relationship with him and their history this has more meaning than "God is gracious".

Another way of saying it is "The LORD is gracious". Jews considered the divine name very sacred, so in order to avoid misusing it, they developed the practice of substituting the word "Adonai" (meaning "Lord") whenever they saw it. That practice was carried on when the Bible was translated into other languages. As a result, many English translations still use "the LORD" (with small caps) whenever YHWH apppears.

JOHN: English form of Iohannes, which was the Latin form of the Greek name Ιωαννης (Ioannes), itself derived from the Hebrew name יוֹחָנָן (Yochanan) meaning "YAHWEH is gracious".

My name book says 'see Sean' and under Sean it says, "the Irish form of John developed from the French Jean. it is also spelt as it is pronounced (Shaun or Shawn) and also used for girls as Shauna and shawna."

I'm a Palestinian, and I was once born whilst the Palestinian revolution was once in complete impact. So my mothers and fathers named me Thaer, this means that insurgent. I like my title, however as God blessed me with getting towards Islam I now consider it is excellent that I difference my title to an Islamic title. I intend on replacing my title to Mustapha after one of the vital Prophet Muhammad P.B.U.H names, I love it greater than my present title besides. PEACE!!!!
