Consent by a judge or parent is required to protect the health and safety of young teens. Physicians, their staff, and their lobbying groups make an enormous amount of money from doing procedures. When large amounts of money are available, sometimes you don't get a truly objective opinion whether a procedure is needed, or whether the doctor doing the procedure is the most qualified for the task. If the doctor was being objective, you would expect them to turn away some teens, as being too risky for surgery. It even happens to some patients wanting a tonsilectomy.
When parents aren't notified, the teen's prior medical history may not be avilable to the doctor deciding whether a procedure should be done. There may be some factor(s) that the teen is unaware of that could be a complication for the surgery.
Since the safety of the teen is important not only to the parent, but also to the state (and to the unbirthed baby), consent of the parent or judge is needed.

This depends on the state as to the law. But my opinion is NO. Young girls need permission for everything from getting a band aid in the nurse's office to having thier ear's pierced. Abortion is a complicated and invasive medical procedure. Young girls can not have any other surgery without parental notification and or permission. Why should abortions be any different? As far as incest/rape pregnancies that is a bogus argument as a very miniscual number of victims in those cases become pregnant and, certainly, if that were the case a parent would more than like consent to the operation to terminate such a pregnancy.

I'm not going to read all of the response, so chances are this has already been said as I feel it is a common response. If teens are not able to get some form of birth control without their parents knowing, they are likely to partake in sexual acts without birth control due to the fact that they don't want their parents to know about it. About the abortion thing: I feel like parents should know if their child is going to have an abortion, but I don't feel like they should have to consent to it. It's the child's body and she will have to deal with the consequences herself. A) A mature minor can see a doctor confidentially and discuss medical conditions that they may be facing. B) It's a choice they've mad. If they're partaken in actions that are not respected by their parents, then they need to realize that they are also giving up other things in their life. Bottom line is: if the kid wants to have sex, the kid is going to have sex. I don't think that providing birth control makes kids more likely to do so, because trust me, they will find alternative ways of obtaining these items. It's better to be safe than sorry...the line we've all grown up on.

Minors are not allowed to get surgical procedures done without parental consent.
There are opt-out, judicial procedures for circumstances where parents cannot be told.
Should someone under 18 be able to get an abortion all by herself? I'd say no, not if she's not allowed to do all the other things adults do.
People violating staturoty rape laws need to be prosecuted, another reason to require consent. There are allegations that some abortion providers do not perform this legally required function.

No you are not missing any good points. To listen to idiotic liberals you would think that the only way teenage girls get pregnant are incest or rape. This is similar to their arguments on abortion. Why can a teenage girl not get an aspirin from the school nurse without a parent's approval, but can get a procedure that can risk her life?

I'm not conflicted. A teen needs parental consent to do just about everything else under the sun. If they need an operation to mend a broken bone, remove tonsils, burn off a mole, it all requires a parents consent. So what's wrong with requiring this parental consent with regards to getting an abortion? It's liberal double-speak that supports the idea that parents have no rights to be notified, and it's a contradiction to the law that was somehow re-written from the bench.

No. A minor should always have to get consent from the parents.
It's not about the right to choice or privacy. If you are a minor, you don't have the same rights as an adult. End of story, and you shouldn't be having sex in the first place.
As for rape/incest, this is like comparing apples to oranges. If a girl is raped, her parents need to know, end of story.
As for choice, an adult choice has been made to have sex and create life. The repsonsible thing to do is to have the baby, and if it;s unwanted give it up for adoption.

NO NO AND NO! I'm not one who agrees with abortions at all. I don't think its fair to the unborn child. My little cousin had an abortion and she's been in a state of depression since then and that was two years ago. There are so many other options then murdering the unborn child. There are alot of women out here who can't have children who would be more then happy to adopt the child. I believe if a teenager has a child she should have to give birth to the child. If she then decides she wants to give it up for adoption then that's fine. But don't take away an innocent life

No, my kid couldn't get her ears pierced without my consent and the school nurse can't giver her an aspirin, but she could give her an abortion....
The advocates like to claim that the pregnancy could have been caused by the father of the teen and thus to require parental consent is too much. Exactly how many cases is that, however, and how pathetic are the advocates' thinking that that is common.
If it is not the child's body to choose to take an aspirin, it isn't their body to choose abortion.

Teens girls should NOT be able to have an abortion w/o parental consent. Even if it's rape or incest, teen girls are making a decision that is beyond their maturity.
