You know, at her age she probably doesn't need another sweater or "trinket". One of the best gifts I gave my mother when she was 85 was a framed collage of pictures I took at her party. This hung on her wall for many many years until she passed away last Christmas.
So maybe a collection of pics from some highlights in her life that were captured on film.

I commend you,for thinking about your Grandma, and only having $40.00 to work with. I think It might be best to find out (in a cute little sneaky way),as to what she wants. Pay close attention, because she will give you a clue. You can also ask your mother/father what they think she would like, that cost under $40.00 (don't forget tax!). Also an engraved item would be nice too,and maybe even a family picture, with all her Grandchildren on it. Grandmothers like things that smell good, and "Knick-Knacks". Add an extra painting on the wall,or buy her a new Bathroom set. Maybe a Rug under the livingroom coffee table,or a Toaster/Coffee Maker. These are a few items you can purchase at a local Department store, that are under $40.00 (Good Luck).

Well, mine never wants anything from me, but I always get her something anyway too. Last year she really liked those sweatsuit type fleece zip-up jackets with the matching pants. Grandma's like that sort of thing. Or does she have a pet? If so, you could make a picture collage or a photo album with a bunch of pictures. You could do that with family members instead too.

Don't go for the usual - we Grannies are fed up to the back teeth (false or otherwise), of 'comfy' Granny type presents. I've got enough bath salts to keep me going in the afterlife, let alone here!
Get here a Playgirl magazine or a large print 'racy' novel.
Last year I got a sailing dinghy - it's great!

Does your Grandmother enjoy, movies, if so how about getting her 2 movie gifts cards, one for her to pay for the movies, and the other for snacks. It's a thought.
