Also you could say survival of the fittest is also a way
but people like Jack the Ripper and other serial killers are definitly a way to cull the herd.

Earthquakes, they kill millions every year, and if that's not, tornadoes. Two unstoppable, unseeable forces, and no time to outrun them. (hurricanes there is at least a few days warning in most instances.)
