My friend called this morning from another state saying her husband has left her, I would like to send her a gift to comfort her. Please give me some advice.

I'm sorry to hear about your friend. Honestly, while you are going through the pain of getting a divorce, you won't have time to read (her eyes will be so swollen from crying herself to sleep).

If you want to give her a thoughful gift, youc an send her a care packet. You can fill it up with scented candles, chocolate, aromatherapy body lotion, fuzzy slippers, everything that spells relaxation.

A massage certificate, beauty salon certificate would be awesome. She needs to jump start her life and feel good about her self.

Just let me add that you are a very thoughtful friend... the best you can do is to listen and support her.

Good luck

My wife once said "The best way to get over a man is to get under another."
An unhappy marriage can be oppressive. For anyone to escape an oppressive lifestyle, there has to be a "blowout" period... where all the things that "just weren't done", are done. Where all the rules that no longer apply are broken. It's part of the healing process, and will help her to achieve balance. Without it, she will never heal, and bear the scars of oppression forever.
Send her the book "The Joy of Sex". Tell her to start living life without the baggage for a while. Then, once the blowout period is over, she'll be able to reset her goals, balance her life, and get on with it.

"Take Your Time" by Ecknath Easwaran - it does not specifically deal with divorce, but it's a great book for everyone to read regarding slowing down and taking time in your life. I read it a year ago and keep re-reading it whenever my life starts speeding up. It's funny, comforting, and wonderful.

I have heard of a book called "Uncoupling" that is supposed to be very good. I'm not sure who wrote it, but it's worth checking out.
