L5/S1 is the vertebrae it stand for between the lowest lumbar the L5 and the highest sacrum vertebrae S1, so its just about the pelvis, the foramen is a hole, im guessing the vertebral foramen, which is the hole the spinal cord runs through is becoming narrower. HNP i believe stands for herniated nucleus pulposus which happens when the inner part of the disc splits and the material inside spills out somewhat, and it looks like its press against the nerve root of the S1 vertebrae, and going inside the foramen causing it to become smaller. You might need to have surgery done to fix this

large right herniated nucleus pulposus at lumbar 5/sacrum 1 (very low back), It extends down with a defect that they can see on the MRI. This defect goes to the root of the nerve of sacrum 1 with narrowing of the opening of the bone where the nerve is coming through, which may be pinching it.
The epidural injection will make you feel much better and they will probably give you something else in the injection to bring down swelling.

definitely get some therapy before you try anything at all invasive. Especially if you only have mild narrowing...you want to wait to get anything else done like surgery or shots.... especially if it is an alignment or muscle problem because you need to fix the cause of the problem, not just the symptoms....

BACK SURGERY IS A LAST RESORT! I herinated my L5/S1 which is in the lumbar spine, you'll do fine with some physical therapy and a good chiropractor. i would even hold off on the injection.

This refers to the edges of the spinal canal. This lateral recess can become too small for the nerves. A decompression is sometime needed to give the nerves extra room and “un-pinch” them. You have a minor case of this. Epidurial(sp) is a pain reducer often a steroid. Btw it is *epidurial, and *lateral.

You have a large herniated disc that's pushing against the nerve running between the discs, causing the space between neighboring discs to compress shut.

Well I have personally had 4 herniated disk and that kind of sounds like what you may have. I am not a doctor but that would be my best guess.

you need to ask your doctor what it means. ask him to put it into laymans terms and what course of treatment you are getting.
