Okay, after you pin, use a needle and thread to take long stitches. Knot one end of the thread and make quite long stitches to hold the two pieces together. It's just a way to hold things together until you use the sewing machine to sew it properly. After you sew it on the machine, you can take out the basting stitches.

when sewing two pieces of material together it sometimes requires that you make a temporary seam using contrasting thread color and large stitches. When item is sewn by hand or machine this basting is removed. It kinda takes the place of pinning and it easy to remove.
