Twenty club members brought two guests.

40 club members, each brought 1 or two guest, so start by if everyone brought 1 guest, then there are 80 people there. The difference between 100 and 80 is the number of people who brought two guests :)

100 at the party 40 members leaves 60 extra guests each brought at least one which means there are 20 extra which means 20 brought one guest and 20 brought two

20*1=20
20*2=40
+40 members=100

iggry's answer is a really good example of reasoniong it out.

It can also be solved with algebra:

Total members is 40, each of whom brought themselves and either 1 or two guests. The total number of people is 100. Let us call the number of members who brought themselves plus 2 guests "X" --

X*(1+2) + (40-X)*(1+1) = 100
X*3 + (40-X)*2 = 100
3X + 80 - 2X = 100
X = 20

So, 20 members brought themsleves plus two guests.
This means the other 20 members (40-X) brought themselves and one guest.

20*2=40

40+40+80
