I think it's unfair and that they should have given you a chance.
But if it's not racial discrimination, sexual harassment, etc. there's not much you can do.
Maybe your friend flirted to get the job. Maybe the guy got used.
People like that usually get their comeuppance, eventually.

I don't think it's legal, I don't know; but the reality is that there's nothing you can do about it. Even if the practice is illegal (it's not "fair", but that means nothing), are you willing to take them to court? And how could you possibly prove your case, especially if the work isn't specialized and you were both qualified? In fact, if the position is sales, good looks and body might be a big factor in the hiring process - better looking people sell more (may not apply to telesales, obviously). Regardless, this sounds like a chickensh*t outfit. Forget about it - move on. Find a place that can actually use what in your head, not on your chest.

Well, in some case yes, after all would you hire some toothless, poorly dressed person to be a receptionsit? I wouldn't. But also, someone who is pretty should not be hired rather then some one who is less attractive by magazine standerds, but better at the job. It depends on the place, but darling it sounds like to me you got the short end of the stick. Would you want to have worked in that environment anyway?

i think that a person shouldnt be hired for the way they look. they should hire a person for the way they work, so i do think they should of given you a chance. you dont have to flirt to get a position, but if you see its working for other then you should try too.but not too far.

No if they hired her indeed and it was truly based on her looks. They did you a favor by not hiring you. That behavior is considered unethical in the work place. Companies that don't adhere to their social responsibilities and fairness practices don't last very long, trust me.
Example - Enron

It may not be fair, but it is legal and common. All things being equal, the better looking person will win. Sometimes even a less qualified person who is better looking wins...I think it is one of the side-effects of the evolutionary process...

It is definitely NOT fair for the company to do this, but when you are dealing with human beings, things are not going to be always fair.
