Social Science, is the study of all aspects of society, social interaction, basically anything with which humans interact in the world. The difference between the social sciences and the pure or hard sciences and the humanities is what really differentiates them. Social sciences as the name implies is a study carried out using scientific methods qualitative and quantitative, it is this which is the main differentiating factor with the humanities. However because the social sciences deal not only with objective
realities, but with the inter-subjectivity of individuals within societies it is very often considered an impure or soft science. The Philosophy of science tends to treat both areas the same although the object of study with the physical sciences often seems more tangible than the area of social science.

Social sciences allow people to evaluate in a much more structured and detailed way the world in which they live, it is often taught as part of Philosophy courses to teach students the scientific (grounded in the real world) aspect of an otherwise abstract subject. It also raises awareness and has caused people to question society, decisions that individuals and collectives make and they way we treat each other.

Bobby B. May well be a social scientist, because the definition is spot on.I will add that it is sometimes taken as part of a general science/mathematics course to obtain a Bsc.degree it was at the university I attended, we considered it to be a bit of `light relief` in what was otherwise pure science and maths. It is also a named degree on its` own. The subject area is vast and there is a lot to learn.

I don't think I can give you an actual definition - however you should read Georg Simmel's essay "Conflict". In it, he states that conflict is a necssary and good component of society as it brings about social change as well as creating comraderie among people. It's a short read and very easy to understand.
