When the planet Mars becomes habitable, or we make it habitable; and we have the technology to go to the red planet; should we maybe cross-breed our animals? Like the Liger that's crossbred from a lion and tiger.Cross-breed them so that we would have some unique, or almost unique animals on the red planet?
I mean wouldnt that kinda suck or seem boring everything was the same on mars as it is on Earth?Wouldnt it be more interesting if we sent some almost different animals and stuff to mars so that it would be unique and standout from the earth.Yes, the first animals would be decendents of animals on Earth, but eventually after a couple of generations or so, they would stand out as unique.
The animals, plants, and maybe food assuming it's all heathy and everything.

So who thinks it's a good idea? And who thinks I've lost my mind?

The bad thing about crossbreeding animals in the way that you suggested is that the result (the liger for example) is sterile. A crossbred animal cannot produce offspring.

The key word here is "when" Mars becomes habitable. It's not going to develop a breatheable atmosphere on its own. I'm not sure we would be able to create one, the movie Red Planet notwithstanding. Mars has no protection from solar rays, so it would be deadly to live there without an atmosphere like the Earth's. You'd need a sealed dome that can withstand cosmic rays, and you could never go outside for any extended period of time.

If you could, feel free to make Ligers and Lepigators, and whatever. I don't think you've lost your mind, just priorities. I agree with Stephen Hawking that we have to leave this planet at some point, but we would be better off developing the technology that will get us to to the nearby stars, if we can discover a planet circling one of them that is habitable. With Mars, we're more interested in mining it and studying it. Not for living there. Too cold, too lethal, and those planetary dust storms would kinda suck too.

I really wonder how you came up with that :)

I think if the technology ever gets into such an advanced level as to terraform planets, specially engineered bacteria would be needed, which would require genetic engineering to be at a certain level. Thus, not only cross-breeding, but to create totally new species could be possible.

And I suppose to be able for the animals to live in such a hostile enviroment, some modification would be neccessary, i.e. humans can always find thick walls to protect themselves from the radiation though a thinner atmosphere but that kind of luxury could be more expensive for the animals to have. It would be much cheaper to simply modify them.

Nothing wrong with the idea. But animals and plants will probably have to be specially bred or genetically engineered to live on the surface anyway. It would make more sense to start with bacteria though, since all life on Earth depends on them. A flourishing colony of bacteria on Mars could add gases to the Martian atmosphere which would be a good thing if we wanted to set up permanent settlements there.

Why don't you read 'Red Mars', 'Blue Mars' and 'Green Mars' by Kim Stanley Robinson which are SF books that will give you a good idea of the real conditions on Mars and of the problems likely to face settlers. They might be slightly out of date but they were based on the absolute facts as understood about ten years ago and they have very little silly fantasy in them. I see they are still in print.

Well that'a an interesting theory....!!!!
Of course first of all Mars must be habitable but that should take quite some time.
And to be able to live there we should "constuct" an atmosphere similar to the Earths atmosphere to be able humans and the cross-breed animals to survive. I don't know but I think that it is quite puzzling.
It would be more interesting to think a way to "make" animals and some kind of humans that can live without the need for oxygen.
That can make thing less boring!!!

the concept is good but leave well enough alone. the chances of us making mars inhabitable is slim to none.

Yea, I think we should cross-breed chickens and tigers.
