I keep seeing answer about Gw & his military service. No he did not go to Viet Nam but yes he joined the Air National Guard & yes he did this for the same reason a lot of others did, to excape going to war. Some times it works, some times it didnt but at least he joined. What about those who went to Canada? Are they also draftdodgers. They seem to be heros in libs eyes.So who is right & who is wrong. Those who serve or those who run away.

Yes he joined. But wait, the group he joined was where all the big shots sent their kids because the unit had never been called up and would never be called up.

This question is not simple to answer (I spent 6 years in service during VN). Take a walk through the VN war memorial then think about those that skipped out. The youth of this country that sign up and risk their lives for it deserve leadership from those leading the country. Neither Johnson his crew or George and his bunch of yes men have even come close to doing that.
So who is right or wrong, I have no idea.

I work at with vets every day and get the chance to talk to lots of them about their experiences in Viet., Korea, and WWII. None of them think war is good, none think we should have gone into Viet. or Korea because we weren't willing to win, they were wars started by politicians and ended by them, therefore we lost. They and I am proud of what they did over there because they were fighting for what was right, to overcome communism, a fact which many people have forgotten. Many people have forgotten why we went over to fight in Afganistan and Iraq, to fight terrorism, i.e. radical islam, unless we stay on track as a people politicians will again use the American people and we will suffer defeat as a nation and shame our soldiers again. Saying you support the soldiers but, not support what they do is an oxi-moron. They need your total support not just a pat on the back and then a bomb on their best friend, so support them all the way and support the war.

Neither side is "Right". Clinton was a noted draft dodger, and the Democrats sent the message that it was OK until suddenly John Kerry's service in Vietnam was deemed "superior" to W's.

It's not about a correct message (which would lead to John McCain as president, since his service in Vietnam, including time as a POW, was far more serious and character-reflective than John Kerry's). It's about a political game. And voters would get better government if they ignored it.

Both sides are wrong. Simply and clearly wrong. They should drop the whole debate, and focus on policies involved in running the country.

Those who serve are in the right.

Those who fled to Canada are nothing short of traitors. They should not have been allowed to return. That was another one of Jimmy Carters screw ups. Those who ran to Canada have full citizenship rights and can even hold a federal job. I think they should have been imprisoned upon return.

I have a little more sympathy for those who joined the Reserves or used deferments. War is a scary proposition and I would not blame those tempted to avoid it honorably. I served in the Marines and combat scared me as well.

I am a liberal and the daughter of a retired (liberal) Army officer. I don't support draft dodgers, OR people (George W Bush for one) who use family money to get cushy assignments during time of war. John Kerry is a liberal who served his country on the battlefield.

Only two members of Congress have family members in Iraq. Think about what that means when they vote.

Hey bub, I look at it like this. He joined a outfit that was not going to go but he did join. So I will give him that much. But thats it. He did not go and had no intention of going. As for the ones that ran to Canada to escape the draft, screw them to. They should be barred from ever being in any governmental seat unless it is in a court seat as a defendant for being a draft dodger.

I don't like Bush because of his military record but because his administration and his supporters made their platorm on showing Kerry as rebel who didn't like the war even though he fought in there. I don't see Bush as a coward anymore that I don' see those americans who fled to canada. They were all looking for a way out.

both are right. It should be an individual's choice of what they want to do with their lives. IF they want to fight let them. IF not they should not have to. It may seem wrong for draft dodgers to run in the eyes of conservatives, but I would really like to know why a person should have to die or fight for a cause or they do not beleive in. Good question though.

"those who went to canada" had already been to iraq.. they went to canada because they know the chances of going AGAIN.. and coming out alive where not the best..

maybe you should go in their stead?
OH! And good luck!

I love this.

Where was the media when it was time to look into Slick Willie's military service to our country? He skipped the country, and wrote a nasty letter to his recruiter basically saying "Nyah, nyah. I'm out of the country, and there's nothing you can do about it."

Liberals love anyone who helps them promote their world view no matter how they do it. We conservatives tend to only praise those who do things the right way.
