There are several good ones out there and I personally use and recomend having more than one in your computer. take note that I mean more than one spyware remover. Here are some of my favorites:
Ad-aware se
spybot search and destroy
windows defender
Ccleaner- ( crap cleaner)
cool web shredder

You are going to get 10,000 and 1 answers for this question. There really is not a best. Some are way better than others.You should have 2 or 3 of what ever ones you decide on.

you can try a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus..
i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can block any any popup and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE browser. as you know, most of virus spread throught internet and webpage.
besides, firefox is much smaller than IE, so it run faster than IE.

To me avast is. It lets you know right away when you open a program if it has a virus or if it may have spam
