I want a rough idea of the impression SA makes on the international community, be it negitave or positive, fire away your thoughts. How would you rate it from what you've heard? ist 1st world or 3rd world, comparing it to the wrest of the African continent?

i can not talk for the rest of the world, but being a South African i can honestly say that the people oversees must catch a wake up!

We aren't half naked living in huts! We do have buildings here you know, and computers and cellphones and all types of gadgets just like the rest of the world!

We here in SA have build a better nation, we are trying to live as one proud country but then the foreigners come with their ridiculous crap about us as being racist and 3rd world and poor and hell i don't know what else!

Why don't you come and see for yourself. We have stunning beaches, wine routes, Wonderful sites, we are one of the few friendly places in the world and i heard that our women as been rated as one of the sexiest in compare to the rest of the world.

We are a proud nation and i wont leave SA for any other country.

You have realy put some fat on the fire, let me tell you, I have left SA a long time ago, not because I wanted, but due to my work, most of the people that answer your question speak through there backside as i do not believe they where ever in SA to experience what a wonderfull place it is, yes it have its problems, but the responce you get is from people that do not know SA, the people only hear the bad, and never the wonderfull. What come to my mind, is a deep sorrow that I have to work in a foreing country and not be able to join in the goodness of the land.

Hey - anyone else noticed most people answering are from here?... lol... I know the perception out there is a hybrid of crime, violence, jungle & maneating sharks.. shame...
But I guess if everyone knew how absolutely damn fabulous it is to live here - we'd have to find another place to turn into Eden.
Okay, it's not perfect.Where in the world is it? But you ask anyone at any airport who they find the most helpful and genuine and warm - and it will be South Africans - which to me says a lot about ons tuis, ou boet!
It's the best kept secret. It's one place Muslims & Christians, Catholics & Hindus are on fab terms most of the time - and you can toss in the Sangomas for variety. This is not the rainbow nation only -it's the pot under the rainbow - pity those bliksems around the world keep trying to steal our damned gold!! lol

I guarantee you just what we see on tv is the way we( a huge majority) think of South Africa which is, children running around hungry, malnourished, poverty, families living in straw huts. It's bazaar because that is how they (society)put Africa out there as being. I'm quite sure it is some nice parts of Africa too.

To Brab M: **** your aid! Yes, SA has some asshole politicians, but hey, look who's talking. America is probably the most isolated and self-centered nation in the world. Keep watching CNN and living in your fairytale, far removed from the real world. And have the balls to come have a look at our country yourself.

A wild and dangerous country with no law and order, just not worth the risk to visit. Such a damn pitty we have so much to offer but as long as that perception exists we have no hope of reaping the benefits of the tourism market
Thought to be very third world and in some cases cannibals still running around, come on SA TOURISM BOARD catch a wake up do your job properly your site on the web is kak, countries that are worst than us in crime and poverty have better sites , check www.wowphilippines.com and learn something this is only one of many, they are third world very poor and massive un-employment with a high crime rate and yes the government is corrupt like ours but still promote their country well, wakker skrik julle dom donners.

Hey Brad M:
Your view in the States means sod all to we South Africans. You should listen to the world's view of you lot.
Yes Nelson Mandela is akin to Jesus to most of us here (I should point out that I'm white, so not writing from a perspective of a 'freed' race). One of my proudest days was taking my young daughter along with me to vote for the guy in 1994. He's not responsible for our present woes, in case you didn't know he retired a number of years ago from the post of President.
Unfortunately, the worlds community generally has little idea of South Africa vs the balance of liberated Africa. They generally see Africa as one place, not individual countries (pretty much as we see all yanks as one voice that wants to drag the rest of the world into it's own wars).
When I look at the technology we use, our constitution (the most liberal in the world), our people & the way we live socially, we're way beyond what a lot of people assume we are: we don't have lions roaming the streets anymore, and I stand to be corrected, but SA has never had a cannibal tribe recorded in history.

Definitely third world. The impression here in the States is that of a violent, plague riddled nightmare.
Of course, there's also the ongoing perception of Nelson Mandela as someone akin to Jesus, when in actuality he's responsible for the mess in South Africa now.

david m - we don't really care what the world's view is of us. If the US was to cease foreign aid, you'd all be in a world of hurt.
Oh, and what countries in Africa are 'liberated'? Surely you don't mean the majority ruled countries run by thugs like Mandela, Mbeki and Mugabe?
